Frequently Asked Questions

They are often involved in initially and continually assessing the risks associated with fire in the workplace with their employer, along with making sure any checks/testing of their workplace fire safety arrangements, systems and equipment are carried out, which will include too, the taking charge in the event of an emergency evacuation (real situation or a drilled exercise).

This will always need to be assessed based on the workplace, its location, the working practices that occur within it, the number of staff/visitors likely to be present, along with the use, storage of items of equipment/fuel sources and any sources of ignition, which could/may compound/increase the risk of a fire being able to start in the first place.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 expects that competent persons are appointed in order to assist employers to undertake their preventive and protective measures, so dependent on the size and nature of the business and the working practices, wardens may be beneficial/required.

They will assist in making sure all persons are evacuating the premises in a timely manner, they will be sweeping the workplace in the direction of travel towards the exit doors, closing doors and windows behind them/making sure no one is left behind and, at the final muster point, checking that all persons are present and accounted for. They may also be responsible for directing any Fire & Rescue personnel to the scene and providing them with any relevant information required.

We advise that you renew your training every 3 years.
